The Cake Tasting

Hello My #TyingtheKnotTuesday Friends!

I have missed you! And I have been so looking forward to sharing this particular blog post with you.

There are very few things I would claim to have expertise, but cake is definitely one of them. I know it is all trendy at weddings to have a dessert other than cake served, but I honestly can’t imagine a wedding, where I am the bride, without a cake. I am actually one of those people who LOVES cake! And an affair without cake would definitely be a sad one in my book!

From the minute Calvin put the ring on my finger, there were a few vendors I knew I wanted to be a part of our day immediately. And It’s All About the Cake was definitely one of them. I am not one of those girls who doesn’t care what the cake tastes like as long as it looks good. I definitely care about the cake being amazing tasting! And the best part about It’s All About the Cake is that they know how to make a cake taste good, and look gorgeous all at the same time. So when it was time to make an appointment for the cake tasting, I knew exactly who I was going to call. And it worked out so perfectly that I could schedule the tasting on my birthday weekend. What’s better than celebrating your birthday than with cake?

So the morning of Saturday, April 9th Calvin, my parents and I headed down to Dana Point to have some delicious brunch at What A Dish (the catering company attached) and cake at It’s All About the Cake.

Of course I had to dress in theme, and I was definitely channeling my inner Marie Antoinette when I woke up that morning.

The minute that plate hit our table my face literally became the heart-eyed emoji. I couldn’t have been more excited to lick the entire plate clean. Unfortunately, other people had attended this event with me so I couldn’t behave like a barbarian. Maybe next time…

On our plate, we had two different types of cake. Chocolate and Vanilla. Both Calvin and I tend to like Vanilla cake best, but honestly both were incredibly amazing. If we had wanted, they also serve banana, apple, carrot, cream, red velvet, lemon, strawberry and spice cake if we had wanted to try those. Red Velvet is a super popular option, so many people also request that when they head into their tasting, but Calvin and I were totally happy with just our plain old chocolate and vanilla.

Also on the plate were different frostings and fillings. Starting from the top we had buttercream (!!!), lemon, raspberry, pastry cream, chocolate mouse, whipped cream, and strawberries. Full menu below if you want to check out all of the other amazing options.

If you had asked Calvin and I before what kind of wedding cake we wanted, this would have definitely been our prediction. And it was definitely as amazing as we imagined. This forkful consisted of the vanilla cake, lemon filling, pastry cream, and buttercream. It was so light and delicious and I am pretty sure I had to taste this twice just to be sure I liked it ;]

Our second forkful was a chocolate cake with raspberry filling, pastry cream and buttercream. I would never have thought I would love the raspberry filling as much as I did! It was sooo delicious! We also tried the same combination with the vanilla cake and fell even more in love.

Our third forkful was the chocolate cake with chocolate mouse and buttercream. I knew pretty quickly that this wasn’t going to be my cup of tea. I am not a huge chocolate person to begin with and mouse is definitely not my style. This cake I am sure is delicious to the chocolate-lover, but this cake was immediately ruled out for us. We also tried a strawberry whipped cream, vanilla cake forkful, but as a girl with a strawberry allergy that was also ruled out. Calvin said it was amazing though! Sorry babe!

From there, Calvin and I looked at the cake tasting menu to see what else we wanted to try. They don’t bring out all of the different fillings and flavors, but we decided that we also wanted to try the Banana Cream, Peanut Butter Cup and Cookies and Cream. I mean you only go cake tasting once, right?

Below is the banana cream with the vanilla cake, and it was delicious! However, we had already fallen pretty in love with the lemon and raspberry so we knew this one was out too.

This forkful was the chocolate cake with the cookies and cream frosting. Oh Mi Oh My was it good! I am a HUGE oreo freak so I knew I had to try it when I saw it on the menu! Despite not loving chocolate, oreo is a totally different thing in my mind. I loved this option!

The last forkful we tried was the vanilla cake with the peanut butter cup frosting. As much as I love oreo, is as much as Calvin loves Peanut Butter Cup. So we also knew this had to be tried!

Once we had tried all of the different flavors and fillings, Calvin and I began designing the aesthetic of the cake.

Our cake will have three layers, all rounds with a straight edge, not rounded edges like my example below. Our bottom tier will be the vanilla cake with the lemon filling, pastry cream and buttercream frosting. This layer will be distinctly different than the others in design. It will have the rosette and snowflake style like below in white. I knew I wanted a special texture on the bottom layer, but many of the examples I brought in for design can only be obtained through fondant. Which for me, was definitely not an option since I don’t want my cake to taste like cardboard. Sorry, not sorry. The second layer will have the vanilla cake with raspberry filling, pastry cream, and buttercream. And the third layer will be the chocolate cake with cookies and cream filling and vanilla buttercream. Both these layers will be covered with plain white vanilla buttercream and eventually donned in real pink and white roses and peonies.

I can’t wait to see how the final cake turns out and it will definitely be a highlight of the wedding in my opinion! Calvin and I had so much fun at our cake tasting and it has only gotten us more excited for more of the wedding events ahead.

As always Happy #TyingtheKnotTuesday and see you next week where I will be introducing you to my Bridesmaid and Cousin Alyssa!

Love, X’s and O’s,

Hayley

The Website

Hello and Happy #TyingtheKnotTuesday! I hope everyone had an amazing New Year and are now getting ready to wish the ones they love a Happy Valentine’s Day!

I have always loved Valentine’s Day even before I had a fiancé to share it with. It is always a great reminder to shower the ones you love year round, but it is especially fun on this day to give valentines and embrace the love. Calvin always jokes that anyone who doesn’t know me well would be a failure at being my valentine. I am allergic to strawberries and hate chocolate (no chocolate covered strawberries for me), I do not like red roses (another Valentine’s staple), and I am not a huge jewelry person (as you are all aware of from past blog posts). But for those who know me well, the secret to my heart are candy conversation hearts. The minute they have those at Target or CVS, I run to the store and do a little happy dance. And before you ask, yes I like the chalky consistency! They are delicious, colorful and send me well wishes! What’s not to like?

Moving on, even thought I could talk about Valentine’s Day all day! At my desk, I have a wedding countdown and every Monday when I come in I turn the weeks down. This Monday has officially became 30 WEEKS till the wedding! I can’t believe how fast the time has already flown by. When I first put out my countdown we had 64 weeks! We have honestly had so much fun being engaged, but I am even more excited for our next step husband and wife.

Within the past couple weeks Calvin and I also starting marriage counseling at our church. It has definitely been insightful and I am so excited to share with all of you our experience once we have finished. But along with that, we have completed our wedding website! When Calvin and I were talking about what he could do for the wedding, this was the first thing that we decided on (weddings are kind of a girly thing in case you didn’t know ;]). He is such a techy kind of guy and he has honestly done me proud by creating this website. I LOVE it!

So please check out the website below. Calvin and I are both so excited to share it with you.

The Engagement Photos

As I have said numerous times, to say Calvin and I love our engagement photos would be an understatement. Priscila Valentina honestly did the most amazing job, and Nick and Kishi made both Calvin and I feel so comfortable. And we also had so much fun taking them! Choosing a Save the Date picture is going to be near to impossible! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will lessen my babble this week and let you enjoy a sampling of our pictures. Also, check out our blog post at Priscila Valentina.

The Bridesmaid Dress

It’s the Holiday Season! The Most Wonderful time of the year! And 25 days until Christmas! I have set my DVR to ABC Family for all of my favorite Holiday movies and decorated my mini-apartment sized Christmas tree with all the trimmings. I totally got suckered into buying Egg Nog and those Pillsbury sugar cookies at the market yesterday. But hey! It is Christmas!

For those of you who are unaware, I am an extreme holiday person. I love ALL holidays and each and every one of them holds a special place for me, but the period from October 1st to December 31st is always my favorite. I love this time of year when we are extra festive, reflect on our blessings, and celebrate the wonderfulness that we have in our lives. Calvin always makes fun of me when I get excited to decorate every spare inch, watch every holiday-related movie, and bake themed meals for the time of year. But I know it is one of his secret reasons for loving me.

But onto something I am very thankful for this year, my bridesmaids. On Saturday, November 21st, 7 of my lovely bridesmaids and I went shopping for Bridesmaids dresses. I am SO thankful they made the trek down to Orange County to assist me in picking out and trying on dresses. We dearly missed the ones who couldn’t make it, but there are so many more events to celebrate with them as well! I can’t believe Calvin and I have already been engaged 6 months!

The Inspiration

The minute I saw the below pictures pop-up on Instagram I knew they were contenders. I fell in love with the ethereal and romantic look, the soft shades, and the different necklines. I really wanted to let my bridesmaids not only pick the color they wanted, but also the style they felt comfortable in and I really think we accomplished that with these dresses. Plus, aren’t they gorgeous?

The day we went shopping I honestly woke up so excited to see so many of my loved ones! It was like my birthday! Lunch and shopping with all my girlies in my mind it is the definition of the perfect day!

For lunch we went to Mariposa at Neiman Marcus. For those of you who haven’t been there, it is honestly one of my favorite spots! I always feel so ladylike when I go here. I love the little chicken broth in a teacup and the popovers with strawberry butter they serve before you even get to your entrée. They are so delicious! Wow, I am writing them a yelp review and they don’t even know it. We all dined on delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches and sipped on tea before we headed over to try on dresses. At one point Christen looked at me and was like they “You barely ate” but honestly I was so distracted and happy I didn’t even want to! I am a major foody so for me this equals major love.

As I previously mentioned in my bridesmaid asking post, I love showering people in gifts. I honestly have just as much fun shopping for someone else as I do for myself (I would be lying if I said I loved it more.) So to show my appreciation for coming, each girl received a little something at their place at the table. A little mugs and kisses from me ;]

From lunch, we carpooled over to Bella Bridesmaid in Corona del Mar. I had actually made appointments for both Bella and the White Dress across the street, but once we got to Bella and saw the dresses I had in mind we didn’t need to go to another store.

I strongly recommend to any bride-to-be to have an idea of what you want before you go in. There are so many options and your appointments go by so quickly. It took our whole appointment just picking the colors and necklines for each individual girl. If we hadn’t already had the specific dresses and color scheme in mind before, I honestly think we would have been there all day.

When trying on the dresses, just like when you try on wedding dresses, everything comes in a larger size so the girls were definitely swimming in some of the dresses. Also, each style of dress only was there in one color so we really had to use our imaginations to picture the dresses in the right size and color!

As per usual when you get a group of 20-something year old girls together, a ton of pictures were taken. So please enjoy a glimpse into our bridesmaid shopping day! I had such an amazing time and I hope they all did too =]

Since our wedding is going to be more on the formal side, we decided to go with longer dresses. Above are three of the four dresses the girls will be wearing on my BIG day. I will go into more detail of who is wearing what and in what color below! Because I couldn’t help myself, I nicknamed the different dresses to remember which one is which. So bear with me because honestly some of the nicknames make no sense, but they were the first thing that came to mind so they stuck.

Above are the three colors the girls got to choose from. The far left is an ivory, the middle that Kelly is wearing is called Sand, and the far right is a light blush called Nude. My mom and I loved having the chance to hold up each of the colors to each girl and helping them decided which one was best for them. It is so funny how many of them had such an obvious color choice!

I actually didn’t catch a picture of any of the girls in the far left dress. This is the “cowl dress” and Ashley, Alyssa, and Chelsea will be wearing it. Ashley in Nude, Alyssa in Ivory, and Chelsea in Sand.

Christen is wearing the “ruffle dress” so called for obvious reasons. Christen and Sophie will be donning these dresses on August 27th. Sophie in Nude and Christen in Sand.

This is what I like to call the “boob dress” (so called because the dresses were too big on them and their boobs kept falling out. hehe. Don’t worry they wont do that on the actual day…..I hope!) Candice, Katie, and Jacqueline will be wearing these dresses. Candice in Ivory, Katie in Nude, and Jacq in Sand.

Above is the “baby dress” once again no idea why I called it this, but it works! Kelly, Berkeley, and Lexie will be wearing this dress the day I walk down the aisle. Kelly in Ivory, Berkeley in Sand, and Lexie in Nude.

Thanks for coming back for this weeks #TyingtheKnotTuesday As always, I am so glad I get to share this ever so exciting time with you! Happy Holidays!
